140th AAUW Anniversary Celebration & Meet, Greet, and Eat

New members did not have a chance to meet & greet last year for our September Kick-Off. We want to welcome them to this year’s kick-off along with guests exploring AAUW. We will enjoy hot and cold appetizer stations, a beverage station, and a cash bar. We know there will be interactive discussions, a new special interest group update, and we will conduct branch business. We will award the Sr. Matilda Grant and celebrate the 140th Anniversary of AAUW.

This event will a community education/outreach event. It will be in place of our monthly branch/business meeting. The event will be free to participants, but preregistration will be required. The event will be live with an option for individuals to participate virtually by ZOOM. Information on the electronic registration process and sharing of ZOOM links, electronic handouts, and program evaluations will be communicated by the public policy/advocacy issue committees and collaborating organizations.  The target audience will consist of branch members and guests; La Roche University students, faculty, and staff; Crisis Center North community of clients, staff, and volunteers; members of other AAUW branches (Fox Chapel and Pittsburgh); and North Hills residents.

Shape the Future and Gateway to Equity

Gateway to Equity Recipient will receive the award and speak

Title: “August Wilson’s Two Trans Running:  Pittsburgh’s Hill District in the 60s and Today”

Gateway to Equity Speaker: Sister Rita Yeasted

The sixth in Wilson’s 10-play cycle of the 20th Century, “Two Trains” tells the story of the Hill District in the early days of the Civil Rights Movement. Set in a restaurant on Wylie Avenue, the play’s characters discuss the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s plan to seize the property of Black residents as part of “urban renewal.” Written in the late 80s, the play captures the loss of a vital Black neighborhood two decades earlier.  Sister Rita Yeasted will discuss that history and its aftermath at the March 19 meeting. The play will be performed at the Pittsburgh Public Theater in June. Schedule of events:

Title: City of Pittsburgh Gender Equity Committee & Local CEDAW Updates

Speaker: CEDAW Committee Member

Updates on local CEDAW efforts. Pittsburgh became the 6th City for CEDAW in 2016. Our branch is a supporting organization for the grassroots community group Pittsburgh for CEDAW. The City of Pittsburgh signed an Ordinance that led to the first-ever Gender Equity Commission in the City of Pittsburgh. They partnered with AAUW to bring Work Smart to Pittsburgh. We will also get an update on the work of the Allegheny County for CEDAW Coalition.
