40th Anniversary Celebration – Past Presidents
AAUW North Hills Pittsburgh Branch
Our local branch was chartered in November of 1970. The 33 charter members initiated many of the current branch activities. Currently we have about 80 members. This branch has demonstrated a continuing and active interest in education, legislation, international relations, cultural events and the community. An active interest has been taken to support work of the Association. We have been instrumental in establishing a kindergarten, hosting candidate informational meetings, offering programs in accordance with our mission that are open to all interested parties, and promoting women’s interests in the area. From our beginning we have supported our community in various efforts. Each year we join other groups in supporting the annual Martin Luther King Breakfast and the International Day of Peace.
The branch also offers interest groups to its members: Morning and Evening Book Group; International Dinner Group; Bridge, Lunch Group, and Cultural Outings. Branch meetings are held once per month, September through May. They provide for the intellectual enrichment of our members. Most of our meetings are held at La Roche College, 9000 Babcock Boulevard, 15237. Julie Makuta and Peggy Schmiedecke are our co-chair C/U Partner Representatives
For many years we have offered sessions of the foreign policy discussion group, “Great Decisions“. These sessions are open to the public and are held on Saturday mornings in February and March. In addition to supporting the national AAUW Funds, each year the North Hills Branch awards a grant to a LaRoche College senior to aid her in completing her college work.
